Inspections, Recalls, Advisories & Warnings

Garage Sale Season: It's spring and for many Canadians, garage sales are an annual ritual. It's a win, win situation, but with certain products, especially those intended for use by children, the savings may not be worth the risk. As a vendor, you are held legally responsible if caught selling or giving away items that fail to meet safety standards. Ensuring safety in garage sale transactions is a two-way street and buyers are also encouraged to use caution when buying second-hand items.

CautionFood Recall Alerts

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's list of the most recent public advisories for high-risk food recalls. The CFIA issues public advisories for all food products where consumption of the food could cause serious health consequences.

The CFIA classifies recalls based on the level of health risk associated with the food product being recalled. For information on recalls and recall levels, please consult our Food Recall Fact Sheet.

A record of all recalls (Class I , II and III), including those that did not include a public warning, can be found in our Food Recall Reports.

An archive of previously issued recalls is also available.

CautionConsumer Product Recalls

Recalls are initiated by an importer or a manufacturer after becoming aware that the product is or may have a safety concern. Health Canada works cooperatively with companies to ensure the effective and efficient removal of hazardous products from the marketplace.

Magnifying glassRestaurant and Food Service Inspection in Canada

Restaurant and food service inspection across Canada is generally carried out by provincial governments, municipalities or regional health authorities.  If you suspect that your health has been compromised because of food, contact your family physician or local health authority who will follow-up with the appropriate treatment. You can report any concerns about restaurant food to your local inspection authority. If they determine that food (rather than on-site preparation) appears to be the likely cause of illness, they will contact the CFIA to initiate an investigation.

 VehicleVehicle Recalls

Is the vehicle you own safe?
What about the one you are thinking of buying?

A major part of Transport Canada's mandate is the enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which includes the investigation into alleged manufacturing safety defects. When Canadians believe that a manufacturing defect may affect the safe operation of a vehicle, tire or child restraint without providing any prior warning to the vehicle operator or user they can contact the Defect Investigations and Recalls group. The Defects group will document the concern and an investigation may follow. The Recalls group monitors, documents and publishes all safety related recall campaigns that are issued by manufacture's as required under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
