Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum

The Pioneer Museum is located behind Heritage Park in Stony Plain. Look for the Don Gray Barn once you enter Heritage Park. Take the access road at the west side of the parking lot.

From one building, the museum now consists of seventeen buildings not counting the Archiving Room and Resource Room. The Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum is dedicated to increasing the size of the collection, the displays, education opportunities and its relevance to the community. Each year a crop is planted, worked and harvested using old machinery, both mechanical and horse drawn in order to keep the old farming practices alive for the children of today.

The Pioneer Museum collects items of historical interest from Parkland County and presents the stories of these items to visitors from the local area and from many countries around the globe. Most of the Museum work, such as machinery restoration, building restoration and maintenance, archiving artifacts, guiding tours and hosting events, is done by a large group of volunteers.

Our vision is to be an enriching place to explore and enjoy the pioneering past of Stony Plain and Parkland County.

Legacy Street

Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum

Legacy Street is an indoor street scene depicting the 1930’s in a small Alberta town. This major project was made possible by a grant from Alberta Government Community Facility Enhancement Program as well as generous sponsors for the individual exhibits. Legacy Street is a very important addition to the Museum and will provide a heated display area for the winter, making it a major step in the progression in becoming a year round facility for the community. The scaled down buildings house many artifacts and displays from the Dirty Thirties, plus touch screen information stations providing general and local history, pictures, anecdotes, fun quizzes and puzzles.

Tea House

Tea House

Come down on Fridays and Saturdays from May – September for delicious soups, sandwiches, and desserts. You MUST try Oma’s Sauerkraut Soup and the pies are AMAZING!

The Pioneer Museum’s Tea House serves homemade lunches and deserts every weekend during the summer ever since. The soups, sandwiches and pies have become not only well known, but a favourite in the area. Completely run by our volunteers, the Tea House is the museums biggest internal fundraiser and helps provide money to run the operations and programs.

The Pioneer Museum Mercantile was established the summer of 2022 and was created as a fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going back into operations of the museum.

Wondering where to find a snack, cold drink or the perfect gift while visiting the museum?  The Mercantile sells a variety of confections and refreshments.

The Mercantile is our very own gift store housed in the middle of our main office and is the one stop shop on the grounds.  You can find  local artisan work, handmade products as well as our very own Pioneer Museum items and an array of novelty items.

Many of our items are handmade by the volunteers of the museum and are truly “one of a kind” such as birdhouses, wooden tops and other gift items.

We are thrilled to also be able to offer blacksmith art made by our on site blacksmith when he is in during our event days and various weekends through the summer.  Oliver gathers a crowd when he’s working and his artworks are as beautiful as they are unique.

The Mercantile is also your “go to” to buy event tickets, purchase a membership or make a donation.
